Privacy policy
Last updated: 2 November 2026
In short: The apps store your progress only on your device. There is no account, no server of ours and no analytics. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob. Ad requests are marked as child-directed, so the ads are not personalised. Purchases are handled by Apple or Google.
1. Controller
Tom Göckeritz
Kaulsdorfer Str. 8a

Email: [email protected]
2. Scope
This policy covers the apps “Ocean Insight”, “Forest Animals Insight”, “Desert Animals Insight”, “Birds Insight”, “Insects Insight”, “Safari Insight”, “Dogs Insight”, “Horses Insight” for iOS and Android (together “the apps”) and this website, animals-insight.app.
3. Data in the apps
3.1 Data stored on your device
The apps store only on your device:
- discovered animals, favourites and history,
- streak, experience points, level, badges and quiz results,
- settings such as language, theme, sounds, haptics and reminder time,
- purchase status (Premium and unlocked animals).
This data is not sent to us and we cannot see it. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, as storing it is needed for the app to work. You can delete it at any time in the app under Settings → Delete my data, or by uninstalling the app.
3.2 Daily reminder
If you turn on the reminder, the app schedules a notification on your device and asks for permission to send notifications. No push service or server is involved.
3.3 Advertising with Google AdMob (free version)
The free version shows ads through Google AdMob, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. This includes banners, full-screen ads and videos you can choose to watch to unlock an animal.
To deliver ads, Google processes data from your device, such as the IP address, device and app information and, where available, an advertising ID. This is used to serve and count ads, limit how often they appear and prevent fraud.
Every ad request from the apps is marked as child-directed and under the age of consent, with the content rating “G” (all audiences). Google therefore does not show personalised ads or ads based on past behaviour.
On first launch, a consent dialog from Google (User Messaging Platform) asks for your choice where your country requires it. On iPhone, the app also asks whether it may track you across apps (App Tracking Transparency). The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and § 25(1) of the German TDDDG). You can change it at any time in the app under Settings → Privacy options, and on iPhone also under iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
Google is partly a controller in its own right for this processing. See the Google Privacy Policy and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
With Premium, the app no longer loads ads.
3.4 In-app purchases
Purchases such as Premium or unlocking a single animal are handled entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). The app only receives confirmation from the store that a purchase was made and stores the purchase status on your device. We do not receive payment details. The stores only send us aggregated sales and payout reports. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
3.5 No analytics, no accounts
The apps use no analytics or crash-reporting services, no user accounts and no server of ours. Texts, animal pictures and maps are bundled with the app.
3.6 Photos from Wikimedia Commons (Ocean Insight only)
Ocean Insight shows extra photos on an animal's detail page, loaded from Wikimedia Commons when you open it (upload.wikimedia.org, run by the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., 1 Montgomery Street, Suite 1600, San Francisco, CA 94104, USA). The Wikimedia Foundation receives your IP address and technical data about your device. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in showing freely licensed photos (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). See the Wikimedia Foundation Privacy Policy.
3.7 App Store and Google Play
When you download an app, Apple and Google process data as independent controllers, such as your account and payment details. Their privacy policies apply.
4. This website
4.1 Hosting and server logs
The website runs on a server of netcup GmbH, Emmy-Noether-Str. 10, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany, located in the EU. For each request the server logs the IP address, time, requested address, status code, bytes sent, referring page and browser identifier. The logs are used for security and troubleshooting and are deleted after 90 days at the latest. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating securely (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
4.2 Cloudflare
The website is delivered through Cloudflare, a service of Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. Cloudflare forwards requests, encrypts the connection and blocks attacks, and processes your IP address and technical connection data to do so. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a secure and fast website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses in Cloudflare's data processing agreement also apply. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
4.3 No cookies, no tracking
The website sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser and loads nothing from third parties, not even fonts.
5. Contact by email
If you email us, we process your message and email address to answer your request (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR). We delete emails once they are no longer needed, and after two years at the latest unless the law requires us to keep them.
6. Transfers outside the EU
Google and Cloudflare may also process data in the USA. Both are certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which is covered by an adequacy decision of the European Commission (Art. 45 GDPR). They also use the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR). The photos in Ocean Insight come from Wikimedia Foundation servers, which may be in the USA and other countries (see 3.6).
7. Children
The apps are suitable for all ages. They require no registration and ask for no personal details. Ads are requested in a child-appropriate, non-personalised way as described in 3.3. Parents can control purchases with Apple's or Google's parental controls and can contact us at any time.
8. Retention
App data stays on your device until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app. We delete website server logs after 90 days at the latest, and emails as described in section 5.
9. Your rights
You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future. To do so, email [email protected].
You can also complain to a data protection authority. The authority responsible for us is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Alt-Moabit 59–61, 10555 Berlin, Germany.
10. Changes
We update this policy when the apps, the website or the law change. The version dated above applies.
